Friday, August 22 7:30 BUBBLE Dave (Foster) Birthday BLOWOUT!!! The original Bubble trio for a set of original tunes at the legendary Kenny's Castaways. "The last full band show I played there was in 1990 with my band Flatdog (who rumor has it will reunite in some form on this night...ok...I'm spreading the rumor). We'll be joined that night by the über-rock trio The Jupiter Deluxe (also featuring Tom DeVito as well as Bubble-Beatle Mark Rinzel) and my good friend Em Duff from the band Sweetfeed, who has told me she hasn't played Kenny's since 1988. Then the whole thing will end with some sort of all-star jam...depending on what stars manage to "align" that evening (and who's in town...lots of vacations happen around this time) with many cover tunes and drinks being played and consumed."

If you didn't watch this, take the time. It's an amazing speech. Not rah rah Obah mah inspirational, but a really thoughtful discussion of race. One of my favorite points that no one seems to have gotten upset about was his indictment of corporate greed as the common enemy of black and white prosperity and happiness. I've not heard such anti-corporatism since, well, Edwards! I hope this is just the beginning....

Friday, Feb 8, 2008 Lianne Smith with Greg Peterson opening for Nada Surf's sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom. Thursday Nada Surf is also at Wmsburg Music Hall. I don't know why I'm listing it since it's sold out. I'm just happy for them! Greg Peterson wrote a song that's on the new Nada Surf album, which Matthew sings with Lianne Smith. Jon Pareles said this about it in the NYT:
"As the album ends, “The Film Did Not Go Round” unites love and death: “Everyone’s gotta leave their love sometime/If not now, then at the end of your lifetime.” But the music, a pristine ballad shared by Mr. Caws and Lianne Smith singing in close harmony, finds serenity."
Some of you may remember Greg performing this...at Beauty Love Truth! 3 BLT performers in one NYT review!

Friday, October 26 7:30 PM DAVID REES LECTURE ON ISLAMOFASCISM: "The More You Know" Word Bookstore, Brooklyn 126 Franklin St (Greenpoint) From Rees: "Soft-spoken conservative intellectual David Horowitz has designated October 22-26 as "Islamofascism Awareness Week." In case you didn't know, we are fighting World War IV with Islamofascists-- but "the academic left has mobilized to create sympathy for the enemy and to fight anyone who rallies Americans to defend themselves." Horowitz has enlisted voices of moderation like Ann Coulter, Daniel Pipes, and Rick Santorum(?!?) "to oppose these lies and to rally American students to defend their country." I want a piece of that! So I'm giving a FREE lecture on Islamofascism. If ever a lecture on the nihilistic evil of Islamofascism could be described as "TOTALLY OFF THE HOOK," this is it! . Shoot the Messenger with author, activist and crafty troublemaker Mark Crispin Miller and political comedian Dean Obeidallah. I'm contributing to this show and doing various bit parts each week! Website is still in development, so here's the press release:

Shoot the Messenger is a satirical wrap-up of the week's news from the brain of Daily Show Co-creator Lizz Winstead. A live sketch-comedy show incorporating multi-media elements, it gives us the world as seen through the filters of the fictional producers and on-air talent at "Wake-up World" - the worst morning news show in America. It is an indictment, both hilarious and scathing - not only of the newsmakers, but of the news media that molds them. Shoot The Messenger will give the audience a glimpse into the behind the scenes decision making at a news show, and the process that brings those decisions to the air. And of course the on-air results of the aforementioned horrific brainstorming.

Of course not everyone in the media gets a flogging; Each week Lizz'll interview a media figure who digs deep and gets it right. They'll give us the lowdown on the big stories that were buried (or ignored) by our pals of the over at the corporate run media.

Past guests have included Rachel Maddow, Mark Crispin Miller, Marie Wilson, Ted Rall, Paul Reikoff and Michael Signorile.

The writers, actors and producers of Shoot The Messenger come from Air America Radio and The Daily Show and represent some of the best political comics and writers working today.

And here's a great Time Out New York article about Shoot the Messenger. Ace of Clubs Cabaret under Acme Restaurant. Great Jones (3rd St.) Btwn Broadway and Lafayette. $10
